Domestic sentiment was dampened as the rupee touched a new low of 58 to the dollar on dollar outflows and strong demand for the American currency from oil importers.

On the BSE, consumer durables index fell the most by 2.08 per cent, followed by realty 1.52 per cent, banking 1.12 per cent and healthcare 1.04 per cent.

On the other hand, IT, oil & gas, TECk and FMCG indices supported the Sensex uptrend with IT index up 1.01 per cent, followed by TECk 0.46 per cent and FMCG 0.14 per cent.

Among 30-share Sensex, Wipro, Infosys, NTPC, HDFC and Bajaj Auto were the top five gainers, while the top five losers were Jindal Steel, BHEL, Maruti, ICICI Bank and Tata Motors.

European stocks were unchanged after three consecutive weeks of losses, as China’s export growth tumbled to a 10-month low while Japan’s economy expanded more than initially estimated. US index futures and Asian shares gained.

Stoxx 50 was up 1.92 points or 0.07 per cent at 2,726.00, FTSE 100 was down 4.59 points or 0.07 per cent at 6,407.40 and DAX was up 68.21 points or 0.83 per cent at 8,322.89.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 surged 636.67 points or 4.94 per cent to 13,514.20 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was up 69.76 points or 0.32 per cent at 21,645.02.

The markets opened on a soft note and slipped lower yet initially managed to trade near the previous close. Selling pressure led the markets lower and indices gradually drifted downwards closing the day on a weak note. Among the sectoral indices IT gained more than 1% while Realty & Oil & Gas lost more than 1% each .In the Sensex stocks Infosys (4.42%), Jindal Steel (2.25%) and Tata Steel (1.64%) were the gainers while Hero Motocorp (3.65%), Bajaj Auto (3.32%), ONGC (2.85%) were among the major losers. The Sensex lost 150 points or 0.76% to close at 19,610 and the Nifty lost 47 points or 0.78% to close at 5,939.

Total traded turnover stood at Rs 143,618 cr. In equities FIIs were net sellers (Rs 87 cr) while DIIs sellers of (Rs 72 cr). On the derivatives side, FIIs were net sellers in Index Futures (Rs 1,076 cr) Stock Options (Rs 67 cr) while they were net buyers in Index Options (Rs 652 cr) Stock Futures (Rs 369 cr).

The US markets ended higher in a volatile session as mixed economic data raised concern on economic recovery but eased fears of early withdrawal of stimulus programme.. The Dow Jones gained 138 points or 0.92% to close 15,116 while the NASDAQ gained 9 points or 0.27% to close at 3,465.

The markets opened on a weak note and slipped lower in the early session post which they traded sideways till the late morning session. Weak GDP data triggered selling in the markets which led the indices to end on a negative note. All the sectoral indices except IT ended in the red with Realty & Oil & Gas losing the most .In the Sensex stocks Infosys (2.79%), Sterlite (2.58%) and TCS (0.07%) were the only gainers while Bharti Airtel (4.86%), Gail India (4.26%), Jindal Steel (4.07%) were among the major losers. The Sensex lost 455 points or 2.25% to close at 19,760 and the Nifty lost 138 points or 2.26% to close at 5,986.

Total traded turnover stood at Rs 144,913 cr. In equities FIIs were net sellers (Rs 504 cr) while DIIs buyers of (Rs 203 cr). On the derivatives side, FIIs were net sellers in Index Futures (Rs 1,828 cr) Stock Options (Rs 19 cr) while they were net buyers in Index Options (Rs 390 cr) Stock Futures (Rs 262 cr).

The US markets lower in a volatile session amidst mixed economic data which showed expansion of manufacturing activity however consumer spending fell for the first time in almost a year.The Dow Jones lost 209 points or 1.36% to close 15,116 while the NASDAQ lost 35 points or 1.01% to close at 3,456.

Asian markets opened on a cautious note as uncertainty over US stimulus prompted investor to book profits from recent highs. Indian indices are also expected to open on a soft note and global developments will be monitored closely for further direction..
